It is something that many of us dream of. Competing at an Olympic stadium, complete with thousands of spectators, in the hope of coming across the line in 1st. For a group of fortunate University of Brighton students this is soon to be a reality.
The BUCS Athletics Outdoor Championship this year is going to be held at the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, and is part of the London Prepares series to test the Stadium for the upcoming Olympic Games in July. The BUCS Championships takes place between the 4th -7th May and will give students the opportunity to compete at the Olympic Stadium less than twelve weeks before the Olympians do. This is a remarkable opportunity for students who have dedicated their time and efforts to their choice of sport as well as their degrees.
Over twenty athletes will be representing the University of Brighton in front of an expected crowd of 40,000 people, this is sure to be the most spectacular BUCS outdoor championship to date. Over 12,000 competitors are to be appearing in the Championships and the University of Brighton team is very excited to be part of it.
University of Brighton discus thrower and medal contender David Coleman (pictured) said “I always dreamt of competing in an Olympic Stadium and for a dream to become reality is priceless. Never having competed in a big stadium in front of thousands of people will be an experience in itself.” This is a huge opportunity for students to be able to do their sport at the stadium where the biggest event in sports is to be held. Things are looking promising for the University of Brighton’s discus thrower, David Coleman says “My aim is to win the BUCS, then go on to represent GB students.” David has a great chance of achieving this goal after recently coming 4th at the World Indoor Throwing Championships in Sweden. David achieved a distance of 51.88m at the indoor championships. With last year's BUCS winner Zane Duquemin (St Marys) throwing 54.93m and David's PB being 56.50m he is in with a chance. All three of last year's medallists are also competing this year providing David with a strong challenge.
Good luck to all those competing!
