If you have been inspired by the Olympics or watched a sport you have never seen before, why not give it a go at university. There are a massive 41 different sports available through Sport Brighton, so finding the right one for you could be hard.
Handball is growing off of the success of the Olympics this summer and a new team was set up last year for the university by student Laurence Curtis.
As the team is new, Laurence runs sessions specifically to get people into the game: “We run Parklife sessions which are basically a taster for people to come along to meet new people and play a bit of the game. If they like the sport and want to get more involved, team training is the next step.”
Currently there is one men’s team and one women’s team but Laurence is looking for more recruits this year. He said: “At Freshers’ Fair – we will have our own stand to promote the sport with videos and pictures of our team.”
He hopes that the effect of the London 2012 will improve people’s awareness of handball: “I hear so many different definitions of what people associate handball as and now they have seen it at the Olympics I feel that the pure speed of the game and adrenaline you get from playing will be enough to increase participation here at the University of Brighton.”
Handball sessions will be running at Eastbourne and Brighton campuses this year. So if you would like to give it a go then pop along to one of their sessions:
Brighton:
Falmer Sports Centre, Saturdays 1- 3pm (starts 6th October)
Eastbourne:
Eastbourne Sports Centre, Fridays 7-8.30pm (starts 5th October)
