Last year’s Club of the Year, BU Motorsport, are overflowing with eager drivers with a boom in participation this year.
24 drivers signed up to compete in the Internal Championships for a busy opening round in Crawley last week.
The Internal Championship is a competition solely made up of Brighton University students. It is used to select the best drivers to represent the University at the nationals and is organised and run by the club.
First year PE (QTS) student George Ward said, “It is great fun to get involved in. My only experience in proper go-kart racing was in the taster session here [Crawley] earlier in the year.”
It gives all drivers a chance to show off their skills behind the wheel in go-karts which are equally equipped. The first round took place at TeamSport Crawely, a two-tiered indoor go-karting track.
All drivers have mixed abilities but BU Motorsport President Joel Fothergill says this adds to the event.
He said, “This championship is the only time we can bring all the members together and go racing. The mix in experience makes it quite interesting because sometimes it can provide very entertaining races. We have a new driver with us, Ollie Morris-Jones, who has raced in Formula Renault.”
The 24 drivers are split into two groups of 12 with the starting grid drawn at random for race one. The grids are then reversed for race two to be as fair as possible.
Joel added, “It can make it hard for some of us trying to get from the back of the grid to the front but it challenges everyone differently.”
The Internal Championship continues this week for round two in Brighton with the final round in March at Daytona Sandown Park in Surrey.
