Brighton Panthers pounced to an 11-6 victory against Sussex at Varsity 2013.
17 sports were contested across the day with many of the matches going to the wire. Mens rugby ended with Sussex scoring a converted try but it wasn’t enough as Brighton were victorious 27-26 in a fierce contest. Brighton’s mens basketball also scraped a one-point victory 77-76 in the final match of the day but Varsity was already won as each side played for pride.
Thumping victories in mens hockey (6-1) and mens American football (40-0) made the winning margin comfortable as mens tennis gained the Panthers title-winning point, overcoming their opponents 4-2.
On another day the result could have been much different with many Sussex teams coming so close to victories. Brighton were able to hold their nerve across the venues and led the day from start to finish.
It will go some way to avenge the narrow 7.5-6.5 defeat Brighton suffered at last year’s Varsity. Look out for the full report on Varsity 2013 coming soon.
