Two University of Brighton students will be representing the Great Britain team at the 2011 World University Games in China next month. Lizzie Edwards (women’s football) and Halil Zorba (men’s weightlifting) successfully gained selection for the GB team. Both are currently on the university’s sports scholarship programme.
Taking place between the 12th and 23rd August, the event will include 12,500 participants from over 150 countries. Lizzie and Halil (pictured above) will be joining Team GB’s delegation of around 240 participants across nearly 20 sports, eager to surpass the 7 medal haul achieved in 2009 which placed Great Britain 18th in the overall medal table. The 26th Summer World University Games was attributed to the city of Shenzhen by the FISU Executive Committee in 2007. After Beijing in 2001 (summer) and Harbin in 2009 (winter), the World University Games will once more return to China as the city of Shenzhen was successful in its bid for the 2011 Summer World University Games. On the southern tip of China, on the Hong-Kong border, Shenzhen has been the fastest growing Chinese city for the last thirty years. The population of 13 million occupies an area of 2020 sqkm.
