Building relationships to support the service industry

The University of Brighton, School of Service Management (SSM) has formed business partnerships with a range of organisations both nationally and internationally. The main focus for business partnerships has been to provide knowledge and expertise to support innovation and strategic decision-making. Whether designing customised learning programmes or advising on long-term business strategies SSM deploy the highest calibre of people.

SSM offer a range of services to business including;

  • Market research on current and future trends
  • Business support for implementing long-term strategies
  • Problem-solving and managing the innovation process
  • Knowledge transfer within and between industries
  • Management development
  • Applied research projects
  • Specialised expertise in the tourism, travel, retail, hospitality and events sector

Talent, Knowledge and Experience characterise SSM. Here are a few of our success stories:

Talent

SSM designed and developed the AirMiles Travel Academy enabling AirMiles Ltd to improve the quality of service through the development of its core staff.

Working in partnership with 8 service providers on a ‘Welcome Sussex’ project SSM provided management development expertise for the hospitality industry. The project was funded by the Learning Skills Council.

Knowledge

SSM managed a ‘Healthy Lifestyle Cluster’, business network, funded by South East England Development Agency. The main aim was to bring together small and medium sized local businesses, and local authorities to problem-solve and work together. As part of the programme workshops were facilitated to enable knowledge transfer between academics and  a range of participants from local organisations.

The Institute of Customer Service commissioned two research projects from SSM. ‘Service Technologies: Developing Strategies’ and ‘Customer Service in the B2B arena’; recently published by the ICS.

Experience

UNESCO contacted SSM to assist in the development of an education tourist strategy for Nigeria. Working with the Nigerian Board of Technical Education SSM designed and implemented primary research to assess the level of education required for an improved tourist infrastructure.

SSM completed evaluation studies for Eastbourne Borough Council on their tourist events: Eastbourne Tennis. Extreme Sports, Airbourne, Magnificent Motors and the Beer Festival..
