Biography

Marina is a geographer with a background in rural studies and an interest in development studies applied to tourism. She completed her PhD in 2000 with her thesis on ‘Rural and Farm Tourism: a comparative study of Apulia (Italy) and the West Country (UK)’.

She sees her mission as generating new knowledge on ways in which tourism can play a key role in stimulating local economies, conserving the environment, developing people and changing lives.

Her most recent research and consultancy are in the field of tourism planning & development, capacity building in tourism, niche tourism development and community based tourism development in the Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Europe.

Her main research interests include:

  • regional development and tourism
  • tourism planning and management
  • niche tourism development and management
  • rural diversification & tourism
  • sustainable development approaches (i.e. responsible tourism)
  • community based tourism
  • tourism and development in sub-Saharan Africa
  • capacity building & curriculum development

She has been previously involved in a variety of European regional planning and tourism management consulting projects. She is currently co-ordinator of the special interest group “Sustainable Tourism in the Local Economies (STILE).” Amongst her most recent engagements, she recently completed a policy note for the World Bank on tourism development in Swaziland, a recommendation note on the development of the Gambia Hotel School for he World Bank, a report on ecotourism development in Nigeria and the Gambia for UNIDO, a study of the Tourism State of the Art in Vietnam and a Capacity Building Training on Sustainable Tourism Management in Nepal, funded by the EU Asia Invest programme. She conducted fieldwork on Community Based Tourism in Namibia, a project funded by UNESCO aiming at the revision of Leisure, Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Nigerian curricula in collaboration with the Nigerian Educational Board and a project funded by South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) named “Healthy Lifestyle Tourism Cluster”.

She has also been involved in the assessment of entrants for the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) "Tourism for Tomorrow Awards 2007."

She is currently undertaking research on:

  • Travellers' philanthropy
  • Tourism and Development in sub-Saharan Africa
