After graduating in 1994 with an International Hospitality Management BA(Hons) James Ullman has gone on to have a successful career in the hospitality industry and is currently Head of Audit with J.D.Wetherspoon. The School of Service Management were delighted to welcome him back as a guest speaker for our final year hospitality students.

James was a student at the School of Service Management from 1990 and graduated in 1994 after completing the placement element of his course in France.  He returns annually to the School to deliver a lecture for the level 3 undergraduate module ‘Contemporary Issues in International Hospitality’.  This year James focussed upon the key issue of ‘social responsibility’ and ‘sustainable consumption’ in the context of the licensed retail sector.

Other guest speakers on this module this year have included Nigel Buchanan, the Operations Director at ‘Yotel’ , Steve Lowy, Founder and Director of  ‘UMI Hotels’ , Adrian Palmer, Director of Spinnaker Productions (Exhibition Management) and Tim Browne, a specialist  human resource management consultant  for the hospitality sector.

The subjects addressed by these guest speakers included: service concept development and product design (Yotel), international franchising (UMI Hotels) and specialist exhibition event planning (Spinnaker Productions).  Students also benefitted from a skills development session on the creation of a strategy for becoming preferred candidates for key positions within the hospitality sector.

The School of Service Management maintains strong links with industry and the guest lecture programme ensures students are up-to-date with current issues in the hospitality industry. Find out more about studying hospitality at the University of Brighton.
