Tourism

Tourism provides a wide range of jobs and opportunities, from community-based projects in developing countries to managing a business. Career opportunities include management of tourist attractions, work in cultural heritage, running your own business, destination marketing and international tourism consultancy.

Our tourism courses

Students have the opportunity to develop the skills required to manage, market and start up a business within the tourism industry and to develop careers within a range of tourist organisations and businesses.

Courses are offered at foundation degree, honours degree and postgraduate level. Our courses in travel and tourism offer unique opportunities to develop specialist marketing or entrepreneurship skills. The International Tourism Management BA(Hons) enjoys a an international reputation and attracts students from over 25 countries.

Postgraduate courses are also available.

Professional and industry links

  • We are one of only 25 institutions worldwide to be linked to the World Tourism Organisation.
  • Students studying Travel and Tourism marketing can gain accreditation from CIM.
  • We are members of the European Association of Tourism and Leisure Education (ATLAS) and International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism (AIEST).

The School has forged strong links with industry through its placement programme and its research and consultancy. Industry representatives advise on the content and development of our courses and contribute to teaching as guest lecturers. Academic staff at the school have substantial industry experience and contacts.

Placements

Students on the BA(Hons) International Tourism Management can take an optional paid placement between year two and the final year. The completion of a placement-based final year project replaces the dissertation. The placement will give you the opportunity to use practical skills, gain hands-on experience and make industry contacts.

A significant number of the school's graduates have gone on to start up their own businesses in the tourism industry.

Research

The school's Centre for Tourism Policy Studies hosts an annual international conference, which is now in its sixth year, and has a visiting researcher programme. Funding is received from a wide range of sources including the UN World Tourism Organisation and the British Council.
