Taking a holiday or travelling for business is an essential and enjoyable part of everyday life and despite current economic changes and impacts, travel continues to be at the core of many peoples lives. Todays modern travel industry is a global business offering enormous opportunity in a variety of exciting sectors. This dynamic industry is sure to see many changes in the future making it an interesting and stimulating choice for study and opportunity in the years to come.

Our travel courses

We provide travel courses at Foundation degree and honours level. Our undergraduate courses in travel and tourism offer unique opportunities to develop specialist marketing or entrepreneurship skills. The BA(Hons) International Travel Management is still the UK's only degree to focus solely on the travel industry.

Late year entry: Students with appropriate qualifications can gain access to years two or three of our courses. Advice on late year entry.

Professional and industry links

The School has excellent links to both industry and key organisations in the travel sector. In 2008 the School inaugurated its first Travel Industry Forum where key players in the industry met to discuss and inform the course and its alignment to the Travel Industry. As a result the School is delighted to welcome affiliation with AA Appointments, ACE (The Association of Cruise Experts) Amadeus UK, Carlson Wagons Lit Travel, the CAA, Equity Travel, Neilson, The Guild of Travel Management Companies (GTMC) Meon Valley Travel, SKAL, TUI.

The School is also a Corporate Member of the ITT and has such both the travel and tourism course benefit from both membership and recognition by this key organisation.

Ongoing organisational input such as this benefits both students study and future prospects. This underpinned by the wide industry experience of all the staff teaching on the degree ensures that Travel students at the School of Service management are some of the best equipped for a successful future in this dynamic sector.

Business travel specialism

For any student wanting to follow a career in business travel, the International Travel Management degree now offers additional endorsement from Institute of Travel and Meetings, the leading professional body for business travel in the UK and Ireland.

Students on the International Travel Management degree will be given the opportunity to enhance their award with certification from ITM by following the
business travel route after level 2 of their studies.

Placements

Students have the opportunity to undertake an optional placement year between years two and three culminating in the completion of a placement based final year project instead of a dissertation. Our placements are usually paid and can take place in the UK or abroad. They will enable you to develop your personal and professional skills, you will be able to form links for employment after graduation and they give you a valuable insight in the travel industry.

Graduate outcomes

We are extremely proud of our excellent track record of graduate success in the travel industry, many graduates are recruited on to specialist management programmes. Our students are employed by companies including

  • Four Seasons Hotels

A number of the school's graduates have gone on to start up their own businesses including a Travel Agency with bases in both Mauritius and Canada and a backpackers hotel in Cambodia.

Research

The school's Centre for Tourism Policy Studies hosts an annual international conference, which is now in its sixth year, and has a visiting researcher programme. Funding is received from a wide range of sources including the World Travel Organisation and the British Council.
