What to expect
Counselling is not about someone telling you what do; it is about empowering you to find your balance so you can achieve the most from your university experience.
The counsellor’s role is to offer support and understanding, and to listen and respond in a non-judgemental, non-critical way. Your counsellor will respect your values, choices and lifestyle. They will help you explore your feelings and try to help you discover the underlying causes for your anxiety. Your first step is to make an appointment either at your local Student Services office, or by telephone or email. Appointments are available on weekdays during term time and during vacation.
Make a counselling appointment
Before your first appointment you will be asked to complete a confidential form to tell us how you have been feeling. This helps your counsellor prepare for their first session with you. Your first appointment will be an initial assessment interview so that you and your counsellor can explore the most effective way to help you.
Typical counselling sessions last for 50 minutes and are always conducted in private, impartial environments.
You can alsoget immediate support at drop-in sessions (lasting up to 30 minutes).
Counselling contracts usually last for 4–6 sessions although if you need more time and the resources are available, you can have up 12 sessions.
Counselling is a high-demand service, so please let us know if you can't keep an appointment, so we can reschedule yours and offer the appointment to someone else.
