Opening a UK bank account

For help choosing the right account for you, follow this link to download the UKCISA Money Advice Service Guide to Basic Bank Accounts (pdf). This has information on the different kind of accounts available.

In order to open a UK Bank Account you will need to visit the bank you have chosen and take with you documents that show who you are. Each bank has its own requirements, but you usually need to provide the following as a minimum:

  • Your passport with student visa, if appropriate OR
  • Your national photo ID card – if you are an EU student

AND

  • A letter from the university confirming you are a student on a University of Brighton course, which course you are on, which year you are in and the start and expected end date of the course.

You can get this letter from the Registry department at your site of study. Before you can request a letter from the university that will allow you to open a UK bank account you must do the following:

  • Identify which bank you are opening an account with and at which branch your account will be.
  • Enter your term time (Brighton) address on StudentCentral. You do this on the 'Personal Page'. Click on the link 'Change your term time address'

Important: You must do this before going to Registry for your letter.

How to open a UK bank account is one of the sessions covered in the International and EU students orientation programme.
