English language and study skills
Studying in the UK
The academic system in the UK may be very different to the one you are used to in your home country. Before you arrive in the UK to start your course, it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the way that teaching and learning is managed in the UK.
UKCISA have produced an information sheet taht the outlines the study methods used in UK universities.
Prepare for Success
This an interactive web resource which allows you to get ready to come to the UK for study. It has sections on independent study, critical thinking, academic writing, and much more. See www.prepareforsuccess.org.uk.
Study Skills
The Academic Study Kit (ASK) website has information, advice and resources about studying at University, such as how to tale effective notes, using the library to find resources, critical thinking, writing essays, and preparing for exams.
They also run workshops during the autumn term at Moulsecoomb, Falmer, Grand Parade, Hastings and Eastbourne, to help you with your Study Skills.
English Language Support
We recognise that there is a difference between the high level of English you come to university with, and the demands of using academic English on a daily basis. Because of this, we offer all students for whom English is a second or other language, free English Language lectures, tutorials and classes. Run by the Brighton Language Institute, all courses are free, and are held weekly on our main campuses. The programme can help with:
- Written assignments
- Developing seminar skills
- Understanding lectures
- Developing spoken communication skills
For more information, see the Learn English website or email elsp@brighton.ac.uk.
Language Exchange
The Language Exchange is for all students and staff at the University of Brighton who would like to make new friends and improve their language skills. It is a great way to find a conversation partner and practice a second or other language with a native speaker. It is open to all students and staff at the University of Brighton and can benefit language learners of all levels.
To post an advert for a conversation partner or to see who else is looking for an exchange, just send us a request to join our Facebook group.
If you have any queries about the Language Exchange, please contact Sarah Herbert at studentadvice@brighton.ac.uk or our International student support team.
Springboard Grants Programme
We are grateful to the Springboard Grants Programme in providing funding to support the Language Exchange project. Find out more information on the fund.
Computer Skills
Information Services at the University of Brighton have a number of online training guides to help you build your confidence using programmes like Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
They also have drop in sessions at all sites for support with IT near the times that assessments and written work are due in, or you can email to arrange an appointment with a member of their training staff.
Information on all of these things is available on the Computer Skills section of the ASK webpages.
