University of Brighton widening access bursary

The University of Brighton widening access bursary is a package made up of a cash bursary, a reduction to your fees and discounts for university services, including accommodation. It is funded by the National Scholarship Programme and does not need to be repaid.

How it works

You do not need to make an application to be considered for this bursary. Using the information you provide to UCAS and Student Finance England, we assess you against the eligibility criteria. You must apply for means-tested support. If you are eligible we will send you an email towards the end of September to confirm you have a bursary.

Make sure you apply to Student Finance England for your student loans and maintenance grant as early as possible. They will advise us if you meet the income criteria for this bursary, however we only receive the information from Student Finance England if you have agreed that they can share it. If you are not sure whether you have given this permission, contact Student Finance England.

Am I eligible to be considered for a widening access bursary?

We provide widening access bursaries to eligible students living in neighbourhoods where fewer people than average go to university.
We use the Higher Education Funding Council for England's Participation of Local Areas (or HEFCE POLAR 2 data set) to determine which neighbourhoods in England are eligible. HEFCE's POLAR2 data classifies neighbourhoods from 1 (those with the lowest participation rates in higher education) to 5 (those with the highest participation rates in higher education).
If you are living in an eligible HEFCE classification 1 postcode when you make your UCAS application you may be eligible for our widening access bursary if you also meet our other criteria.
