Income-related bursaries
The University of Brighton provides income-related bursaries to enable students to pay for books, equipment, travel, study aids, childcare and other course-related costs.
Bursary payment
Bursaries are payable in each year of your course. Awards are made on a simple sliding scale. The tables below show how the system works.

Am I eligible?
University of Brighton income-related bursaries are paid to students who meet the following criteria:
- Full-time undergraduate student from the UK or other EU country
- Eligible for the standard government student support package of maintenance grant and student loans for fees and living costs
- Entering higher education in 2006 or later
- Studying for an undergraduate honours degree, Foundation degree or Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the University of Brighton or
- Studying at Brighton and Sussex Medical School or
- Studying for a University of Brighton validated undergraduate or Foundation degree at an associate college: City College Brighton and Hove, Sussex Coast College Hastings, Plumpton College or Sussex Downs College.
- Your eligibility for a University of Brighton bursary may be affected if you already have a degree or other higher education qualification and you study for another qualification at the same or a lower level.
- In full-time attendance at the university until at least 1st December to qualify for the first instalment, and in attendance until at least 1st May to qualify for the second instalment.
Applying for a University of Brighton bursary
Your student finance application is also used to determine your eligibility for a University of Brighton bursary, you do not apply for this separately.

- Wales: Student Finance Wales
- Other EU countries: Students Finance Services Europe
Unless you choose to opt out (by ticking the opt-out box when you complete your application form), you will automatically be assessed on your bursary entitlement.
Exceptions
These courses have different tuition fee and funding arrangements and do not attract University of Brighton bursaries:
- Nursing, midwifery and allied health professions (AHP) courses
When will my bursary be paid?
Bursary payments will be made to eligible full-time undergraduate students twice a year: at the end of January and in the first week of May. Any bursary payments made to students who then become ineligible (withdraw or intermit) will need to be repaid to the university.
