  • Nursing
  • Midwifery
  • Podiatry
  • Physiotheray

Non-NHS-funded places

If you are not allocated an NHS-funded place then you can apply for the same funding available to other UK undergraduate students. See funding options for UK undergraduates

Living cost support for NHS-funded students

Student loan for living costs

You can apply for a student loan from the government to help with costs such as accommodation, food and travel. The student loan for living costs does not have to be paid back until after you are working and earning more than £21,000 a year.

The amount you are eligible for depends on whether or not you live at your parents' home, your household income, the length of the course and the size of the maintenance grant you are eligible for. A loan of up to £4,395 a year is available to students living away from home and studying outside London (studying up to 45 weeks a year). A loan of up to £3,351 a year is available to students who continue to live at their parents’ home (studying up to 45 weeks a year).

NHS living cost grant

If you have an NHS-funded place and meet the eligilibity criteria then you should receive an NHS grant of £1,000 for each year of your course to help meet living costs. This grant does not depend on any assessment of your financial situation.

NHS bursary 2012

If you have been offered a NHS-funded place on an undergraduate nursing or allied health professions course you are eligible to apply for a means-tested bursary. For students starting in 2012 this would be £2,591 per year if you live away from home, and £2,163 if you live with your parents.

You may also be eligible for a number of additional allowances, including a Dependants Allowance and a Parents Learning Allowance.

To find out how much funding you could potentially receive via an NHS means-tested bursary, use the NHS Student Bursary Estimate Calculator.

How to apply

You will receive an application pack from the NHS Student Grant Unit who will have been informed by the university that you have been offered a NHS-funded place.

Clinical placement costs

Students can claim clinical placement costs where they are attending a placement some distance from their home or site of study. It is possible to be reimbursed for excessive travel costs or accommodation costs if it is not reasonable for you to travel every day.

Please note: the cost must be in excess of normal daily travel costs to your site of study. You must also use the cheapest method of transport.
