Funding for UK undergraduates
UK undergraduates starting in 2013
This page provides a summary of the tuition fee and funding system for full-time undergraduate students from the UK who are starting a university course for the first time in 2013.
Tuition fee loan
You can get a loan from the UK government to cover the cost of your tuition fees whilst you are studying. You start to pay back this student loan after you have left university and you are earning over £21,000 a year.

Student funding for living costs
You can apply for financial support from the government to help you meet your living costs during your studies. You can apply for a living cost loan and may be eligible for a maintenance grant. Your household income and other circumstances determine the specific financial support that is available to you.

Applying for student loans and grants
You don’t need to wait until you have been offered a place at university to apply for your student funding. You can apply from early 2013.

Students with existing higher education qualifications
If you already hold an equivalent or higher level qualification than the one you want to apply for then you are not usually eligible for any government funding (tuition fee loan, maintenance grant or living cost loan). However, you will be eligible for a student living cost loan if your new course leads to a qualification as a:
- medical doctor
- dentist
- veterinary Surgeon
- architect
- social worker
or if the course attracts a means-tested NHS bursary.

University of Brighton bursaries
At Brighton we provide a range of bursaries which are carefully targeted at students who need financial help most. A bursary is money or other support that does not have to be paid back.
University of Brighton bursaries provide support to young people leaving local authority care, students from low income families and students from neighbourhoods where fewer people than average go to university. We also provide bursaries for students from lower income families studying our courses in architecture, pharmacy and teaching.

There is also specific funding available for UK undergraduates studying
- in the health professions (including medicine, nursing and pysiotherapy)
- social work
Further sources of financial help
Specific financial help is available from the government for careleavers, students with disabilities and students with children or other dependants. Depending on your family circumstances you could also be eligible for certain state benefits and child tax credits whilst you are studying.
