University scholarships

International students are eligible for the following university scholarships:


University of Brighton scholarship

In 2011, 105 University of Brighton scholarships worth £500 each will be awarded to eligible students at the end of years 1 and 2, and year 3 of four-year courses, as well as years 1 to 4 of five-year Brighton and Sussex Medical School degrees.

Eligibility

To be eligible to receive one of these scholarships you should:

  • Be a full-time undergraduate student
  • Be a full-time PGCE student on a two-year full-time PGCE conversion course
  • Be studying at the University of Brighton, one of its partner colleges, or the Brighton and Sussex Medical School*
  • Have started your course in 2006 or after

Exception
*BSMS students who have been awarded a University of Sussex Chancellor's Scholarship are not eligible to be considered for this scholarship.

How to apply

There is no application process as these scholarships are awarded on the basis of student academic performance in end of year assessments.

International scholarship

In 2011, 40 University of Brighton international scholarships worth a reduction of £4,000 off the cost of your tuition fees for each year of your course are available to new, full-time international undergraduate and postgraduate taught degree students.

Criteria

The criteria for awarding University of Brighton international scholarships are primarily merit-based.

  • Merit does not necessarily have to mean academic merit but could also be interpreted to include outstanding performance in a variety of spheres.
  • The strongest candidates will be those demonstrating a mixture of academic merit (including English language ability) and other merit or outstanding achievement in a particular field of activity.
  • You will also need to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to pay the remainder of the fees.
Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply for a scholarship you must be a new, full-time undergraduate or postgraduate taught degree international student with a minimum course duration of 1 year, and must have applied for the course of your choice at the University of Brighton, and have been offered a place on that course for 2011 entry.

Students studying foundation degrees or undergraduate degrees at University of Brighton partner colleges are not eligible for these awards. Existing international students are not eligible unless starting a new undergraduate or postgraduate programme.

International research scholarship

4 University of Brighton international research scholarships worth a reduction of 50 per cent off the cost of your tuition fees for your research programme for up to a maximum of 3 years are available to outstanding international research students in all areas of study.

Criteria

The criteria for awarding University of Brighton international research scholarships are as follows:

  • academic merit (including English language ability)
  • full fee-paying international student status
  • acceptance onto a research programme at the University of Brighton
Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply for a scholarship you must be a new, full-time international research student, and must have applied to join a research programme at the University of Brighton, and have been offered a place for 2011 entry.

International Huxley scholarship

We are proud to announce a series of £2,000 scholarships for international students studying for certain MSc and MRes programmes within the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences.

Criteria

The criteria for awarding the Huxley scholarships are primarily merit-based.

  • Merit does not necessarily have to mean academic merit but could also be interpreted to include outstanding performance in a variety of spheres.
  • The strongest candidates will be those demonstrating an understanding of knowledge of the school's research expertise.
  • Recipients of this award must not hold or expect to hold any other University of Brighton scholarships.
  • Successful students will be notified by email and must hold a conditional or unconditional offer to be eligible, see below.
Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply for a Huxley scholarship you must be a new, full-time international masters degree student with a minimum course duration of one year. Students studying for masters degrees at University of Brighton partner colleges are not eligible for these awards. Existing international students are not eligible unless starting a new masters programme. Students may not always be able to study the project that they highlight in their personal statement as this will depend on the available resources and expertise within the university.

Elite athletes scholarship
  • Bursary of up to a maximum of £1,500 per year of study
  • Free access to university sport facilities
  • Free sports science support by BASES accredited staff
  • Access to sports medicine support at reduced rates through Sportswise
  • Sports/academic mentor
  • Access to University of Brighton sports coaches where available in their sport
Eligibility
  • You should have reached junior or senior national level of competition or performance and have the potential and dedication to reach world class potential or performance level (or equivalent) in your sport
  • You should have been accepted on a University of Brighton undergraduate course or be a current undergraduate student of the university

Talented sports performers scholarship
  • Access to University of Brighton sports squads and coaches where available in their sport
  • Financial assistance up to a maximum of £500 per academic year
  • A talented sports performers card allowing free use of the university sports facilities
  • Access to sports science and sports medicine at reduced rates
Eligibility
  • You should have represented your sport at national or regional level or be able to demonstrate that you have the potential to compete at these levels
  • You should have been accepted on a University of Brighton course or be a current student of the university

Santander international masters scholarship

Up to eight masters scholarships funded by the Santander Group, worth a reduction of £5,000 off the cost of your tuition fees, are available to new full-time international and some EU (Portuguese and Spanish) taught postgraduate degree students, starting their programmes at the University of Brighton in 2011.

Criteria

These scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence. Preference will be given to students who have completed their first degree at one of the universities in the Santander network in the countries listed below in the eligibility section below. The panel will seek to award the scholarships to candidates from two different Santander network countries if possible.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for one of these scholarships you need to:

  • hold an offer of admission to a one year, full-time masters programme in any subject at the University of Brighton by the closing date for the scholarships. This offer can be unconditional or conditional (but the scholarship will not be confirmed until the conditions are met).
  • be a national from, and be residing in, one of the following Santander network countries:
    • Argentina
    • Brazil
    • Chile
    • China
    • Colombia
    • Mexico
    • Portugal
    • Puerto Rico
    • Russia
    • Singapore
    • Spain
    • Uruguay
    • USA
    • Venezuela
  • be expecting to have, or already have, a good UK bachelor honours degree or equivalent degree from your home country (preferably from an affiliated Santander university).

Exception
A selected Santander masters scholar cannot hold any other scholarship award from another source.

Santander Formula scholarship

Four scholarships funded by Santander Universities, worth a reduction of €5,000 off the cost of your tuition fees, will be available for new eligible taught postgraduate students (from Brazil or Spain) starting their programmes at the University of Brighton in autumn 2011.

Criteria

These scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence. Preference will be given to students who have completed their first degree at an affiliated Santander university. The basis of the award will be subject to assessment based upon the personal circumstances of the scholar.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for one of these scholarships you need to:

  • hold an offer of admission to a one year, full time masters programme in any subject at the University of Brighton by the closing date for the scholarships. This offer can be unconditional or conditional (but the scholarship will not be confirmed until the conditions are met).
  • be a national from Brazil and have studied at a Brazilian university OR be a national from Spain and have studied at a Spanish university.
Exceptions
  • Existing postgraduate students are not eligible to apply.
  • A selected Santander masters scholar cannot hold any other scholarship award from another source.

Pestalozzi scholarship

These scholarships, which are available for the three years of an undergraduate degree, cover the full cost of tuition fees and also provide a financial bursary which meets half the recipient's living costs. Pestalozzi scholars will be expected to meet the rest of their living costs from paid employment.

Eligibility criteria
  • University of Brighton Pestalozzi scholarships are open to students at the Pestalozzi International Village, Sedlescombe, East Sussex who wish to go on to higher education and who would not be able to do so without the support of the scheme.
