Nursing diploma and Midwifery diploma students

What funding is available

The funding package available to Nursing diploma and Midwifery diploma students includes:

Non Means-Tested NHS Bursary

What is it?

The non means-tested bursary is a flat rate maintenance grant that is awarded by the NHS Student Grants Unit. Neither your or your family's income is taken into account for the assessment and the award is non-repayable.

Eligibility

You must be offered a NHS funded place on a Nursing diploma or Midwifery diploma at the University the Brighton.

How much?

The rates below apply to students who started their course after September 2007.

Bursary rates for 2011/2012
Accommodation Standard amount per year
Students living in London £7,872
Students living elsewhere £6,701
Students living in the parental home £6,701

Allowances

In addition you may be eligible for further allowances. An allowance is an extra payment on your bursary. The categories are as follows:

Dependants Allowance

The Dependants Allowance is payable to students who are mainly or wholly financially responsible for a child/ren or adult dependant/s.

The allowance is means-tested, on both you and your family's income.

Rates for 2011/2012
Allowance Max per year
Spouse, partner, civil partner or first child £2,238
Each subsequent child £539

Parents Learning Allowance

The Parents Learning Allowance is a means-tested addition to the NHS Bursary. The allowance is a single payment of £1,104 each year that does not depend on how many dependant children a student has.

How do I apply?

Students will receive an application pack from the NHS Student Grant Unit (who will have been informed by the university that the student has been offered an NHS funded place).

You should apply for the extra allowances at the same time as applying for your bursary application.

The SGU will send you notification of the level of your award.

Payment

Payments will be made in monthly instalments in advance directly to your bank account via BACS (Bank Automated Credit System).

The first instalment will cover two months and will be paid into your bank account within two weeks of the start of your course.

Clinical Placement Costs

Students can claim clinical placement costs where they are attending a placement some distance from their home or site of study. It is possible to be reimbursed excessive travel costs or accommodation costs if it is not reasonable for you to travel every day.

Please note: the cost must be in excess of normal daily travel costs to your site of study. You must also use the cheapest method of transport.

How to apply

You should apply to the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Payment

Any costs will be paid monthly in arrears.
