Nursing degree and Allied Health Profession students

What funding is available

Allied Health Professions courses include:

  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Podiatry
  • Nursing (BSc and MSc)

The funding package available to Nursing degree and AHP students includes:

Tuition fees

The NHS allocates a specific number of places that they will fund. The number is determined by shortages in qualified health professionals working within the NHS.

Students who are offered one of those places will receive full fee assistance (this includes EU students).

AHP students exceeding the set number of places purchased above must apply to their Local Authority for funding like other students. These students will not get a NHS bursary.

NHS means-tested bursary

If you have been offered a NHS-funded place you are eligible to apply for a means-tested bursary.

As the title suggests, this fund is dependent on your income.

The rates below apply to students who started their course after September 2007.

Maximum bursary available 2011-2012
Accommodation Maximum per year
Student living elsewhere £2,810
Student living in parents home £2,346

The amounts above are based on the average length of study - 30 weeks.

If Students are studying 'extra weeks' their award will be increased accordingly.

How to apply

You will receive an application pack from the NHS Student Grant Unit who will have been informed by the university that you have been offered a NHS funded place.

Student loan for maintenance

You can also apply for a Student Loan to help with your living costs, the amount you receive is determined by your personal circumstances. Interest rates are low and linked to inflation. You don't have to pay it back until you are earning more than £15,000 a year.

Additional allowances

AHP students are also eligible for additional allowances. Extra payments can be made to the bursary for those students with extra costs.

These include:

Dependants Allowance

The Dependants Allowance is payable to students who are mainly or wholly financially responsible for a child/ren or adult dependant/s.

The allowance is means-tested.

Rates for 2011-2012
Allowance Max per year
Spouse, partner, civil partner or first child £2,640
Each subsequent child £539

Parents Learning Allowance

The Parents Learning Allowance is a means-tested addition to the NHS Bursary. The allowance is a single payment of £1,303 each year that does not depend on how many dependant children a student has.

Two Homes Grant

This allowance is payable if you must maintain a second home for you or your dependant/s, other than your term time address.

All of the above payments are assessed and made as part of the means-tested bursary.

Clinical Placement Costs

Students can claim clinical placement costs where they are attending a placement some distance from their home or site of study. It is possible to be reimbursed for excessive travel costs or accommodation costs if it is not reasonable for you to travel every day.

Please note: the cost must be in excess of normal daily travel costs to your site of study. You must also use the cheapest method of transport.
