What funding is available?
Postgraduate students, with the exception of those studying on a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) course, are not entitled to any statutory funding and the majority are self-financing.
There is very limited help available and it is advised that you are fully aware of the situation and financially prepared before you arrive. There is useful information about funding postgraduate study on the direct.gov website.
Career Development Loans
These deferred repayment bank loans may cover tuition fees for vocational courses and sometimes living expenses for full-time study.
Research Councils
There are six councils that may provide funding for individuals to undertake postgraduate study.
Educational trusts
Grants may be available, usually for limited amounts. The Educational Grants Directory, available in libraries, provides contact details.
NHS Trust employees
University contracts with the NHS enable many NHS staff to access all university courses without payment of fees. NHS staff need to contact the trust that employs them for further details.
Students from EU countries other than the UK
EU students interested in studying a postgraduate course should contact the British Council office in their country for further advice about funding support.
