Cycling to university

A number of students and staff already get on their bikes to travel to campus - why not join? Even if it's only once or twice a week, or when the weather is right.

As a member of staff, you can sign up to be part of the university's bicycle users group (BUG) - just email as bicycle users group

Storage

There is cycle parking on all university sites. 

Free secure cycle cages at available at Grand Parade, Moulsecoomb, Falmer and Eastbourne. In order to get a key, pay a £5 deposit at the Registry office (Mezzanine floor of Cockcroft in Moulsecoomb). Take your receipt to the Watts caretakers and voilà! You've got a key which opens all cages on all sites.

Facilities

Lockers - There are lockers in several university buildings where you can store your cycle equipment if you don't fancy bringing it into the office.

Showers - There are showers on the Moulsecoomb, Falmer and Eastbourne sites. Just find the nearest gym. There are also 2 showers in Mayfield House in Falmer, one on the bottom and top floor, respectively.

Bike maintenance

There are free bicycle pumps at all university campuses in front of the main buildings. If you don't see one, please ask the caretakers, it might be in maintenance.

Professional quality bicycle repair kits are freely available at all university halls of residence as well.

I need a bike

Depending what you are looking for, you can find great bikes at a number of first or second hand shops. You can also try websites like Greencycle - but hurry, they go fast.

Students and Staff get a 10% discount at Evans' Cycles (Brighton) on bicycles and equipment.

As a member of staff, you can also get an interest-free loan in order to buy a bicycle with the Bike Loan Scheme. This scheme works with independent retailers, find a list of partner shops on the cycle scheme website.

In Brighton, there are cycle lanes on most roads and for those that aren't yet confident enough to ride solo, you can join the local bike train. It leaves from The Level in Brighton near St. Peter's church at 8.30am, reaching the Moulsecoomb campus at 8.40 and University of Sussex at 8.55.

There is now a cycle link via the stadium access via the train bridge west of the new bypass or via Lucraft Road, past the Falmer Academy. More details in the map below:

Cycle access to Falmer campus

The Environmental Action Network has continuously helped to improve the situation for cyclists getting to the Falmer campus. There is a new route under construction through the Aldridge Academy which enables cyclists step-free access to reach the campus.
