Accreditation
Accreditation is an industry-recognised standard and provides the assurance that our teaching is of high quality and has been approved by an independent body of academics and industrialists. Our courses are accredited by professional bodies including:
Fieldwork
Field trips are at the heart of our learning experience. Fieldwork enables students to develop practical skills and apply their learning in real-world situations, preparing them for life beyond university.
Our students studying geography, geology or environmental subjects have enjoyed residential fieldwork in the UK, in locations such as Wales and Yorkshire, whilst overseas destinations have included North Africa, Greece, Sicily, Spain, Cyprus and France.
Our students studying civil engineering and construction subjects have benefited from visiting real construction sites. With a focus on multi-disciplinary learning, the opportunity to work with students from other subjects to construct small-scale mock-ups of iconic building such as the London Gherkin, mirrors the working environment students will experience after they graduate.
Placements
The opportunity of a placement year in industry helps increase the employability of our students, helping to develop practical experience, build confidence and provide valuable networking contacts.
Our students have been on placement with organisations such as:

Facilities
A range of professional-standard facilities, housed in the award-winning Cockcroft building, support our teaching, research and consultancy activities.
Construction and civil engineering students benefit from access to: specialist laboratories for structural dynamics, geotechnics, thermal dynamics and avionics including: centrifuge, concrete lab, hydraulics lab with flume and computer-controlled wave generation.
Students studying geography, geology and environment subjects learn by using: computer labs running GIS; remote sensing and image analysis software; geology, soil and water analysis labs; public health and geochemical labs, including walk-in storage; advanced microscope technology equipment for rock and mineral analysis; equipment for field-based geophysical surveying.
