  • COVID-19: Our response

COVID-19: Our response

The welfare of our 19,000 students alongside that of our 2,600 staff is and remains our highest priority.

Since the start of the pandemic, our approach has been based on official UK government guidance and developed in consultation with Public Health England.

See our range of frequently asked questions.

Latest government guidance

Following the recent government announcement, Brighton & Hove and Eastbourne have been placed in a national lockdown. More information on what this means can be found on the gov.uk website.

You can read the latest statement from Brighton and Hove City Council about the status of COVID-19 in the city, on the council website.

We are taking a range of steps to provide care and support to any of our students who test positive or who need to self-isolate to ensure that:

  • They are contacted and have opportunities to raise any personal concerns, including if they have any underlying health issues
  • They have access to government guidance and advice on self-isolation and are able to seek medical advice from a local GP if required
  • They have access to food, laundry and other essentials
  • They are able to access a wide range of student support and wellbeing services
  • Those who are able can to continue to engage with their studies via remote learning

Students living in halls of residence are supported by our Residential Life advisers. Those living in private accommodation who test positive will be contacted by Student Support and Guidance Tutors (SSGTs) who are embedded within each of our academic schools. The SSGT will make contact to ensure that the welfare and wellbeing of the student is assessed and they are supported where required. All self-isolating students will be supported to continue to engage with their learning remotely and can also talk to their course leaders should they have any challenges with this.

2020–21 academic year

We welcomed new students as scheduled from Monday 28 September, with teaching beginning from Monday 5 October 2020, and continuing through significant change and challenges.

This is being managed in such a way as to reduce risks and safeguard the health and wellbeing of students and staff by:

  • Delivering our academic programmes through a carefully planned blend of socially distanced campus-based teaching and enhanced digital learning.
  • Relevant students having opportunities for face-to-face on-campus interaction with their academic tutors and peers – albeit in smaller groups which reflect social distancing and related guidelines.
  • The delivery of larger group teaching, such as lectures, through enhanced digital learning.
  • Teaching and learning in specialist facilities taking place in compliance with the appropriate additional safety guidance.
  • Organising the teaching schedule to limit the numbers of students and staff needing to be on campus at any one time.
  • Controlling the way that facilities and services (including libraries, student services and catering outlets) are physically accessed.
  • Introducing appropriate social distancing and cleaning protocols, controlling movements around campus, and other measures such as supporting the wearing of face coverings in certain appropriate circumstances.
