Advice for 2020 international applicants and offer holders

Following the announcement of a national lockdown, and government guidance published on 30 December,  we will continue to add to these FAQ as more information becomes available.

The Minister’s letter can be read here (gov.uk website)

International frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions for students who are nationals of countries that are in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA students) and outside of the EU/EEA (international students) concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and how this will impact their return to campus for the start of the autumn 2020 term.

The university will be delivering a blended learning experience combining online learning and on-campus tuition and has introduced measures to fully support all students’ wellbeing and safety when they arrive on campus to start their course.

If you have any questions or concerns not covered here please contact us:

  • Tel: +44(0) 1273 644757
  • Email: internationaladvice@brighton.ac.uk

+–You ask for a deposit from your international applicants. If I can't travel to the UK will I get this refunded?

We will issue a deposit refund in certain circumstances, including where students’ study plans are disrupted by COVID-19. Check our tuition fee deposit refund policy for details.

+–I’m having trouble booking my flight what’s the latest I can arrive on campus to start my course?

We are allowing a four-week latest start date to provide additional flexibility for students whose travel plans are delayed. This means that with our term start date of 28 September, the latest arrival date will be 26 October. You must enrol on your course before you travel so you can engage in online lectures and make use of other online materials in order to keep up with your classmates before you arrive.

+– I am unable to travel from my country to study in the UK can I start my course remotely?

We want to ensure that if students are unable to arrive by 26 October, that they can still start their studies with us whilst they plan to join us later in semester 1, or for the start of semester 2 on 8 February 2021. You should discuss this with your Student Support and Guidance Contact and then record this by ticking a box confirming this during the enrolment process.

+–Can I defer my place if I can't travel to the UK?

Deferrals to the next academic year are usually permitted. You need to put your request in writing to our admissions team who would then advise if it is possible to defer your particular course. You can send a message directly via Student View.

+–Do I need to do anything before I travel to the UK?

You will need to provide the UK border force with your journey and contact details on a Public Health Locator form 48 hours or less before you arrive in the UK. You can find details of this on the UK government website.

+–What will happen if I need to quarantine for 14 days when I arrive in the UK?

It is a requirement of nationals of some countries to self-isolate or quarantine, for a period of 14 days when they arrive in the UK. We will provide up-to-date advice and support about quarantining to all our students arriving in the UK.

If you are going to be arriving up to the latest start date of 26 October 2020 and living in university accommodation, we will provide accommodation for the quarantine period in our university halls. We will provide you with food and bedding for the 14 days. We need 72 hours notice to arrange your booking so allow for this when you make your arrangements.

If you have arranged private accommodation you can quarantine there provided you can meet the government advice on self-isolation. If you cannot safely quarantine in your own accommodation then you can book a room in university managed halls in the same way.

+–How can I transfer from the airport to my accommodation safely?

If you have not booked quarantine accommodation and transport through us, you should make your own arrangements to travel to your campus. You can travel on public transport but it is compulsory to wear a face covering whilst travelling so please make sure you have one with you when you arrive. If you are required to quarantine on arrival in the UK, the rules state that you should only use public transport if you have no other option.

+–Can I speak to anyone about applying to University of Brighton?

There are several ways to find out more and to get in touch with us.

  • We have a series of online events where you can chat to staff and students.
  • You can ask questions of our students and read blogs they have written.
  • Get in touch with our helpful and expert enquiries team.

+–Can I apply for accommodation now for 2020/21?

Yes, application for university halls is still open.

Given the current circumstances it’s very important that you seek advice on the student visa application you will need to make in order to come to the UK to undertake your course. We provide online guidance on applying for a student visa, and you can contact our International Student Advisers for further individual advice.
