Maths and stats support

Mathematics and statistics support is designed to improve students' relationship with maths and stats by using a diverse range of online resources, as well as offering drop-in sessions for one-to-one support.

No matter what subject you are studying, maths and stats support is available to develop the skills you need, appropriate to your course.

How does it work?

  • Drop-in sessions are available throughout the year to all students at the university.
  • Sessions are run by PhD students and current final year students who are there to help guide you through your mathematical problems (not to answer the questions for you) and suggest ways in which you can gain understanding and confidence in tackling questions.
  • The drop-ins are held online via MS Teams – use the Teams code d4z5r7s
  • Students needing help have to complete the Form in the “General” area of the Teams page, stating which course they are on and which topic they need help with as well as uploading the questions. Then one of the team will get back to the student to arrange an individual session at an agreed time.

Need to know...

This service will be particularly useful if you are a student and wish to enhance your mathematical skills.

We can help you overcome any struggles with maths, and show you how to access support throughout your degree.

Mathcentre

You can also develop your skills using the mathcentre online resources (an open source site run by the sigma Network) which include tutorial videos, formula sheets, and exam type questions:

  • Student topics
  • Resource types for students.
Lecturers teaching other modules which were not maths expected us to know mathematical operations such as integration, differentiation etc. Even though we had a maths module, sometimes we would not have covered those topics yet. I personally realised maths was no longer just a subject but a tool used within other subjects. Therefore I found myself needing some help in some mathematical concepts to be able to successfully pass other modules.
