If you think you have COVID-19

If you develop symptoms or have a positive test result, there are some simple steps to take to make sure we can look after you and our university community.

What do I do if I develop symptoms?

If you think you have symptoms, follow these steps:

  1. If you are on campus or out in public, put on a face covering if able to do so, keep 2m away from others and return to where you live (avoiding public transport if possible).
  2. You will need to self-isolate straight away and refer yourself for a test via www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test.
  3. Call our helpdesk on 01273 642222 so we can find out when and where you’ve been on campus.
  4. Tell your flatmates – anyone living with you is classed as your household and they will also need to self-isolate until you’ve been tested and received your result.
  5. If you are living in halls, also tell the Residential Life team – they can support you and your flatmates with self-isolation.

What should I do if I test positive?

If you test positive for COVID-19, we’re here to help. Just follow these important steps:

  1. Self-isolate – If you test positive you will need to self-isolate in your home for at least 10 days from when your symptoms started. Anyone you live with must self-isolate for 14 days from when your symptoms started. By home, we mean your usual place of residence – you should not travel to another place of residence, for instance your family’s home. You may also want to consider whether there are any other people with whom you’ve recently had contact that you could let know, so that they can take precautions too.
  2. Let us know – By using this form (you can also access the form through the My Brighton student portal). Letting us know will enable us to support you and to work with our local Health Protection Team (HPT) to help keep the university community safe. If you haven’t already done so when you first developed symptoms, then call our helpdesk on 01273 642222 too, so we can find out when and where you’ve been on campus.

What should I do if I need to self-isolate?

  • If you have tested positive, do not go out until at least 10 days after the date of your test and for 14 days if you live with someone who tests positive. Please refer to this Public Health England advice for the most up-to-date information.
  • To make sure you’re supported, your Student Support and Guidance Tutor (SSGT) will be in touch, and if you’re living in halls, you’ll hear from the Residential Life team.
  • You are also likely to be contacted by NHS Test and Trace and/or the local Health Protection Team directly and we encourage you to engage with these services accordingly.

For any additional support during this time, please contact our student wellbeing team.

  • Read our self-isolation FAQs for further advice and information
