With a greater number of medicines in clinical use, and greater diversity in their mechanisms of action, the role of the clinical pharmacist in identifying and solving medicines-related problems has never been more critical. This important work is being carried out in a changing, and more complex environment, with the use of Information Technology and extended clinical roles affecting service delivery.
Therefore there is an urgent need to design, develop and assess innovative ways of providing pharmaceutical care to maximise the benefit to patient care. One key exemplar is medication safety. The BSCMO facilitates the development of evidence-based approaches to service delivery and helps measure its impact on patient care.
