As an interdisciplinary centre, CAPPE works with colleagues across the university, in the City of Brighton where we are based and with institutions across the globe. Our collaborative work and partnerships extend from Brighton to Stockholm, Buenos Aires, Ghent, Johannesburg, San Francisco, Verona and other parts of the world.
SWIP UK (Society for Women in Philosophy) is an organisation of women working in the field of philosophy in the UK, including students and professionals, working both within and outside of academia. CAPPE co-organised and hosted the 2016 SWIP UP annual conference 2016.
In March of 2015 Brighton hosted the British Political Studies Association Conference. The PSA conference brings together scholars of politics from around the globe. We were particularly pleased to welcome as keynote speakers Lisa Disch Professor of Politic Science and Women’s Studies from the University of Michigan; the Political Secretary of PODEMOS Íñigo Errejón Galván; and renowned Guardian cartoonist Steve Bell.
In December 2015 CAPPE hosted a conference celebrating the life and work of Ernesto Laclau, who died in April 2014. Originally from Argentina, his ideas about radical democracy and populism influenced grassroots activists, thinkers and politicians from Latin America's new left to Greece, Spain and Great Britain. This conference, organised in collaboration with the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities and the Embassy of Argentina, explored the many aspects of Laclau’s contribution to critical thought: his account of radical politics and democracy; the innovative analysis of populism; and his reworking of ontology in political terms.
