Intro

The International Hospitality Management MSc offers a taught programme that uses academic knowledge to inform operational hospitality management practice.

Our worldwide industry connections enable our postgraduate students to study the hospitality industry from an entrepreneurial, operational and strategic management perspective. You will not only address core business and management subjects, but also hospitality from a design and concept development point of view. You will also study hospitality as a global phenomenon and how it is consumed by cultures and societies.

On this course, you can expect an international approach and student body. Our facilities include a dedicated research lab where you’ll gain professional expertise.

We are an affiliate member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), an educational member of the Institute of Hospitality and members of both the Council for Hospitality Management Education (CHME) and the International Council on Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Education (ICHRIE) all of which informs our teaching and your learning.

The course is suitable if you are looking to convert from another subject area and pursue a future career in hospitality or if you already have a grounding in hospitality or related subject areas such as business, management, events, tourism or sport.

 Modules in focus

Globalisation, Society and Culture considers the ways in which different societies have become more interdependent through a global network of communication and information technologies, and therefore moves beyond the conventionally economic emphasis of conversations on globalisation. The module considers specifically how the industry is affected by this process.

Marketing for Tourism, Hospitality, Events and Sport: Marketing plays a key role not only in constructing and communicating the brand of a particular destination, tourism, sport or hospitality business or an event, but also in achieving its competitive advantage. This module provides a theoretically underpinned understanding of effective approaches to strategic marketing through its exploration of key marketing theories and concepts, marketing strategies, branding and marketing semiotics and their role in creating successful integrated marketing communications in tourism, hospitality, events and sport business practice.

Hospitality Imagineering explores critical aspects of the hospitality industry (particularly hotels and restaurants), the impacts of the business environment and the management of its operations through both an entrepreneurial and imagineering lens. Imagineering, as we see it, is the collective creativity that enables innovative problem solving. Students will investigate issues, trends and managerial imperatives that the hospitality industry face, both in a domestic and an international context.

Food and Beverage Business critically explores food and beverage business practices across the world. Students will develop an advanced understanding of the current philosophies and principles which influence food cultures, and provide the learner with an understanding and appreciation of the concepts, theories and key issues associated with contemporary food cultures.

 Professional experience

Professional-Based Learning Module

All credit-based postgraduate courses at the School of Sport and Service Management offer the Professional-Based Learning module.

The module offers you an opportunity to undertake practical experience in a work environment and gain invaluable first-hand knowledge. It is designed to help you engage with the process of planning and delivering expertise in practice, and to reflect upon and take steps to improve your academic, personal and professional skills.

In Semester 1 (September–January) you will have classes on CV development, interview skills, target setting, reflective practice and experiential learning, leading to 100 hours of professional experience in Semester 2 (February–June). This experience could take the form of a part-time job, an unpaid internship, a volunteering opportunity in the university or time as a mentee in your chosen industry. You can also take this module as part of a live consultancy in connection with one of your tourism, sport, hospitality or event modules, either in the UK or a School of Sport and Service Management project overseas.

Our school-based Employability Hub will be on hand to assist you in securing an experience that best meets your career goals and aspirations. Professional experience will enhance your practice and academic knowledge, and many of our students have started their careers with their placement organisation.

Please note

This module (Professional-based Learning) becomes optional if we assess you as having substantial work experience (equivalent to five years). Assessment must be  either before you begin, or during the first two weeks of the course.

 Learning support

The course is taught by experienced and professionally qualified staff. Class sizes are small and an online learning tool will enable you to access materials delivered in class and engage in specific course tasks. You will have access to a campus and an online library.

There is also English language assistance provided, which includes the following:

  • free academic English tutorials during the course
  • online assignment survival kit
  • peer proofreading service
  • study skills workshops

Student views

 Maria Gebbels

"My journey with the University of Brighton started in 2010 when I joined the  Hospitality Management BA(Hons) programme with a view of gaining academic knowledge to complement my two-year professional experience in the hospitality industry.

"During this degree I was able to acquire management skills and a more thorough understanding of this exciting and vibrant industry through, for instance, practical work in the Culinary Arts Studio, and  learn from passionate lecturers whose desire to teach and grow as academics soon became contagious. After another year in the industry, where I utilised the skills and knowledge gained during the undergraduate degree, I came back to continue my education on the MSc, which for me was the stepping stone into academia.

"Because of the extensive support and encouragement from my lecturers, I successfully completed my masters with a distinction. I then embarked on a PhD, which I was awarded in September 2016 (Career Paths in Hospitality: A Life History Approach).

"My time at the University of Brighton has been truly life changing. Being surrounded by staff who are experts in their fields, and who truly want you to succeed and always motivate you to persevere is invaluable. I would not have grown as an individual and an academic without their continuing support.

"In August 2016 I began my academic career as a lecturer in hospitality management at the University of Greenwich."

Amy Glenie

"I decided to leave my full-time job and go back to university to study for my masters in International Hospitality Management. I chose the University of Brighton due to its excellent teaching reputation.

"Going back into full-time education has been a great challenge with ups and downs but the rewards have more than made up for it. The teaching staff are all very knowledgeable in their field and care about our professional development.

"One of the most beneficial aspects of the course has included studying with people from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities. It has given me the tools to further develop my knowledge and working techniques. I believe that this course has all the features for me to earn high accolades in my professional career."
