Travel

How did you travel to university today?

By weighing up your options and making use of your student discount, you may be able to save money on your transport costs.

Buses

Buses in Brighton

Student keycard and M-tickets can be bought online:

  • City savers are £3.20 for a daily ticket and £13.50 for a weekly ticket. They are valid in the area from Shoreham, Patcham, Falmer and Saltdean, but not on City Sightseeing or Night Buses.
  • Network savers are £3.50 for a daily ticket and £14.50 for a weekly ticket. They are valid on all Brighton & Hove buses including night buses, but are not valid on route 494 or City Sightseeing buses.
  • There are 2 and 3 consecutive day tickets which are only available via the app.

7 day Network saver scratchcard tickets are available from some campus shops for £14.50

Monthly, three-monthly and annual student savers are also available. For all your options, including how to get a smartcard that lets you buy your tickets online, see the Brighton & Hove Buses student portal.

Buses around Eastbourne and Hastings

Eastbourne and Hastings are served by the Stagecoach bus company, who have regular services around both towns and the local areas.

Details of services and discounts can be found on the Stagecoach UK Bus website.

There is also useful information and advice on travel from the Eastbourne Borough Council

If you want to go further afield by bus and train, the Downlander ticket may be useful.

Trains

Railcard

Full-time students and anyone aged 16-25 can save up to one third on train travel across Britain with the 16–25 Railcard. You can apply for a railcard at a train station or online. Santander offer a four year 16-25 railcard free with their 1|2|3 Student Current Account.

Unizone

The Unizone ticket is a Southern Rail season ticket for students travelling in the Brighton, Eastbourne or Worthing areas. Weekly: £17.40; monthly: £66.80; termly: £200.40.

To purchase a Unizone ticket, you need a 16-25 railcard. You must buy Unizone tickets at one of the staffed stations within the Unizone area. You cannot buy these tickets online, on the train or at the machines. Make sure you have your valid uni card or NUS card and a rail photo identity card. Keep the receipt safe in case the ticket is mislaid.

Book in advance

You can also save money if you book your rail travel in advance and online. Visit the Southern Railway website to book local trips in advance (eg trips to London).

For journeys further afield, check national rail companies such as Virgin Trains, Great Western Railway for their best prices, or visit the National Rail website or thetrainline.com.

Many rail companies release cheap tickets up to 13 weeks before the travel date, so the earlier you book, the more you can save.

Coaches

Full-time students and anyone aged 16-25 can save up to one third on coach fares across Britain with the National Express Young Persons Coachcard.

You can also search for low fares and book in advance to save money. Visit the National Express Funfares website to do so.
