Everyone faces challenges during their time at university. Some can be overcome by working out your own solutions or coping strategies, but for more difficult problems you may decide to seek some form of support.
Student Services offers professional support such as counselling, careers guidance and financial advice, delivered by trained, experienced staff, to help you make the most of your university experience.
We also offer coaching from a team of qualified professionals within Student Services.
Coaching can help you achieve balance within all aspects of your life and help you to realise your potential. It is a form of development where you have the opportunity to reflect on issues and challenges through a one-to-one conversation with your coach.
Coaching is not an advisory service telling you what you should do. Neither is it a therapy that helps you bring understanding and awareness of the past to help you understand what is going on now.
Instead, using principles derived from sports coaching, your coach will help you develop your own ability to grow. During sessions with your coach you will set your own goals and develop action plans to achieve these goals.
The process places emphasis on questions from the coach to help raise your self-awareness and access your inner resources. It will assist personal development through goal-setting, helping you to set a direction and explore a way forward.
Everyone has their own reasons for seeking help – for example, you may want to do better in job interviews, give more confident presentations or improve your time management skills.
You can come to us with any issue that is interfering with your enjoyment and success at university and we will let you know if coaching can help. If coaching is not the best option then we can arrange for you to access one of our other services, if you wish.
You can of course use more than one service simultaneously.
You will need to first complete the online application form and submit it. We will then assess your application and, if we believe coaching will benefit you, we will offer an appointment with a coach based on your campus.
You will be offered a maximum of three one-hour sessions, the frequency of which will be decided upon between yourself and your coach. If after three sessions you are still in need of assistance, we may be able to signpost you to another service or external coach for further interventions.
If you don't feel three sessions are necessary, this is perfectly acceptable.
No preparation is necessary. Just be willing to be open and honest about what you want to achieve and what you think the barriers to your success might be.
The Coaching Service is offered by a team of coaching professionals who can assist your personal development through goal setting, helping you to set a direction and explore a way forward.
This is a confidential service that can help you to explore barriers that may be preventing you from moving forward with an issue. The process requires a commitment on your part to work with the coach to set your own goals and action the steps agreed during the sessions.
Up to three coaching sessions are available, during which time you and your coach will establish what you want to achieve. Both of you will be committed to your advancement. The process places an emphasis on questions to help you raise your self-awareness and access your own resources.
