In 2014, we introduced a formal programme of research mentoring, allocating a mentor from the Professoriate to 14 ERC/School of Education colleagues identified as potential contributors to our Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2020 submission.
The broad aim of the research mentoring programme is to support research, writing and career progression, with particular emphasis on maximising the quality of individual outputs and of colleagues’ prospects for inclusion in a REF 2020 submission. Mentoring support includes face-to-face meetings and written feedback on draft research proposals and publications. It is estimated that the support provided by a mentor to a mentee will amount to approximately three days in total across an academic year. The mentoring scheme and individual pairings/triads will be reviewed approximately once a year, with the outcomes of the review informing its future development.
In recent years, the ERC has also operated a modest seedcorn funding scheme designed to provide relatively inexperienced researcher colleagues with the opportunity to lead a small-scale or pilot project, to produce sufficient data to enable the development of one or more publications, and to provide the basis for a subsequent bid for external funding. Individual projects have been funded for up £4.2k. We hope to offer additional seedcorn funding opportunities in the future, targeting early career researchers and postdoctoral researchers to further support research capacity building.
Researchers gain invaluable experience by attending and presenting at our research seminar programme which hosts world-leading researchers from other universities, such as Professor Julian Sefton-Green (LSE) and Professor Stephen Ball (Institute of Education).
All ERC staff have an annual Staff Development Review (SDR) and academic staff are supported (through ERC/SoE and Research Office funding) to present at national and international research conferences.
