Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust
Our researchers have built a strong collaboration with the surgeons and consultants at the local Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. This has enabled us to deliver cutting edge research through both patient participation and the use of patient donated blood and tissue samples. This is an essential part of our research that enables us to increase our knowledge about many human musculoskeletal diseases. Improving our understanding of these diseases will help us to develop new and improved treatments.

Diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis are characterised by inflammation that causes damage to tissues within the body. In order to alleviate this inflammation, we need to understand how and why it is produced. Bringing together the expertise of Dr Frederique Ponchel (University of Leeds) and Dr Sandra Sacre (Musculoskeletal Research at University of Brighton), a collaborative project examining inflammatory pathways in patient samples is currently ongoing. State-of-the-art cellular and molecular techniques are being used to investigate the role of the innate immune system in these diseases.
