Outstanding research environment
Centres of Research and Enterprise Excellence across our internationally-recognised disciplines foster major research strengths recognised in REF 2014 and by global partners.
Every doctoral student is supported by a dedicated, fully trained supervisory team, usually of two academics.
Postgraduate researcher development training
We offer face-to-face workshops and online training to support the professional and skills development of our doctoral students.
From research plan to viva, our workshops and specialist staff guide students through the major milestones of their PhD.
Festival of Postgraduate Research
Our annual festival celebrates the work of our students and offers opportunities to participate in events such as the national Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.
All (unfunded) doctoral researchers are eligible to apply for one grant per year to support conference attendance.
Many of our students are aligned to our specialist research centres and groups both within and outside of their disciplinary school; all departments have strong connections to regional, national and international research networks.

Flexible research study for everyone
Around one third of our doctoral researchers study part-time, with students from a wide range of backgrounds joining us in their 20s through to their 60s.
Our campuses are spread across the south-coast from Brighton seafront to the South Downs National Park and Eastbourne.
We offer a range of excellent support services including wellbeing support and counselling, childcare and disability services.
