Human resource management research group showcase

This showcase took place on Wednesday 24th June 2015 at Mithras House, University of Brighton

Overview

CROME researchers presented their recent research into the following topics:

  • Engagement
  • Experience of working life
  • Gamification

Presentations

One or two poems

Dr Jenny Knight

Poetic musings on our experiences of working life, and some feelings we may have about it.

Engagement: experience of engagement and training across organisations

Dr Luke Fletcher

This presentation showcased two research papers that Dr Luke Fletcher presented at the 2015 Academy of Management Conference in Vancouver Canada. The first focused on a part of Luke’s PhD project that examined how engagement with one’s job role fluctuates over the course of the workday. By using a daily work survey, Luke found that how tasks were designed and perceived in the scope of one’s general job role were particularly associated with boosts and drops in engagement, and that the psychological process of meaningfulness was critical in these relationships. Also of importance were personal resources, such as feeling emotionally stable and mentally alert, and of feeling psychologically able to engage. The second focused on how perceptions of training and development are associated with staff retention. Survey data collected by the Institute for Employment Studies from a range of UK organisations showed that training and development may be linked to higher levels of staff retention as it activates motivational attitudinal states that strengthen social exchange processes.

Gamification in HRM: what is it? why is it relevant?

Dr Penny Simpson and Pete Jenkins

Drawing upon definitions such as “Gamification is when video games and business have a baby” (Mario Herger), Peter and Penny explained the concept of Gamification and how it is used in business. Their particular business focus is Human Resource Management

Event programme

The showcase was an hour-long snapshot featuring some of the most recent research work within the Human Resource Management research area.
