Imagining work

Imagining work asked the question of employees "how do you see yourself at work?". This ESRC-funded event increased awareness of research and introduced new visual and sensory research approaches designed to understand employee perceptions of work. This is essentially good management and a win:win for employees and organisations.

The event comprised key speakers, discussion and an interactive activity to introduce and promote innovative and interactive ESRC and social science ways of understanding employees' perspectives of their work. In addition to promoting the accessibility and value of social science research, research approaches introduced could potentially be immediately utilised post-event.

This event was exciting as it drew on ESRC research from more conventional sources of knowledge (quantitative and qualitative) to the more pioneering visual and sensory social science approaches. Such new approaches could be added to the existing organisational toolkit of ways to understand employees' perceptions and perspectives.

Speakers and presentations

Dr Penny Simpson from the University of Brighton: Chair: recent research highlighting the importance of understanding employees' feelings about work particularly drawing upon more conventional sources of knowledge (quantitative and qualitative). (pdf)

Dilys Robinson from the Institute for Employment Studies (IES): the use of images and metaphors in research and client projects. (pdf)

Dr Dawn Lyon from the University of Kent: exploring visual and sensory representations of work. This presentation drew on current research into the tacit skills of fishmongers to discuss the use of the visual in gaining new insights into work. For further information, read the relevant article by Dawn Lyon and Les Back entitled Fishmongers in a global economy: Craft and social relation on a London fish market.
