Screen Studies Research and Enterprise Group

Organisation profile

Profile Information

The expertise of this group revolves around the collective term ‘screen’ throughout history, incorporating media from the magic lantern to film, television and video, digital culture and online mobile devices.

Reflecting the range of experiences encompassed by screen-based media, ours is a necessarily rich and interdisciplinary collective. Our expertise includes histories and archiving, politics of identities and representation, literature and genre studies, digital gaming and portable media. This REG enjoys a broad yet distinctive knowledge set incorporating film and image archiving, British television production, discourses of gender and media, children’s culture, fantasy genres such as science fiction and the Gothic, digital communication, audience research, convergence and the podcast.

Connections with the Screen Archive South East, Cinecity, Film Hub South East, Brighton Digital Festival, Brighton Fringe Festival, the Duke of York’s Cinema, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery and the Towner at Eastbourne facilitate our work and ensure it is outwardly facing and connected with the vibrant culture of Brighton & Hove.

Our distinct focus on media, cultures, technologies and histories of the screen facilitates the galvanisation of various research interests around what is a central site of information, entertainment and communication throughout the twentieth, and into the twenty-first century.
