Personal profile

Research interests

My research interests include a range of subject areas including experimentation and numerical simulations in sports engineering, development of digital fabrication design tools, processes and machines, and the use of additive manufacturing to support medical device development.

Supervisory Interests

I am happy to supervise students in a variety of areas including digital fabrication (additive manufacturing, CAD/CAE, electronics), design engineering, sports engineering, and biomedical engineering.

Scholarly biography

After a first degree in medical engineering at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, Dr Covill undertook a PhD in engineering at the University of Brighton in the UK. As a chartered engineer, he has worked on a number of industrial projects in the areas of sports engineering and footwear, medical device and orthopaedic design, heavy engineering and product design, working with and consulting for Clarks International (footwear), Grays International (hockey sticks and cricket bats), Dando Drilling (large scale drilling rigs), OSET (electric motorbikes), ATC (CNC machining of titanium medical devices) and Suteborow (orthopaedic shoulder implants) in the past few years. Dr Covill is currently a principal lecturer at the University of Brighton, and his areas of expertise focus on computer aided design and engineering, structural and thermal modelling, design for manufacturing and additive manufacturing techniques. His current research projects include the steel bicycle project which aims to promote the technical aspects of bicycle engineering, the development of functionally graded biological scaffolds using additive manufacturing techniques, and using additive and subtractive techniques in developing medical devices.
