Dr Hamid Eslimy-Isfahany

Dr Hamid Isfahany is a Structural Engineer, Principal Lecturer in Structural Design and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Dr Isfahany is interested in the (i) role of structural engineers to sustainable design and (ii) pedagogy of engineering education.

Hamid Isfahany

How I like to teach

I have taught structures and design at various levels and the romanticised definition of Civil Engineering, which is “to engineer civilisations”, fuels my enthusiasm for educating the next generation of civil engineers. In my experience, practical and hands on lessons will keep students engaged, hence, my lectures are informed by my design practice and research results. I treat my students as “Civil Engineers in training” and I expect them to act like practitioners. In 2008, I won Excellence in Facilitating and Empowering Learning Awards and I have been nominated for inspirational lecturer by students.

My research interests

I am interested in the role of civil engineering in hazards mitigation and the relevance of structural engineers to sustainable design of buildings, as well as computer-integrated analysis, design and fabrication of structures. I am equally passionate about computer aided (or blended) learning and project based learning to improving students' visualisation, drawing and design skills.

Biography

I joined the University of Brighton in March 2007, during this time I have been Course Leader for Civil Engineering Programme (2007-2012), Course Leader for Science withput Borders Programme (2013-2016) and Assistant Head of School (2015-16). Moreover, I have served as Member of Faculty Academic Board (2008-2011), Faculty Representative in Student Services Committee (2009-2011) and committee member in The ACED - Association of Civil Engineering Departments (2015-16). In 2012, I participated in University Academic Leadership Programme.

Prior to University of Brighton, I was working in University of Wuppertal, Germany, as a Fellow of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation working on affordable earthquake-proof housing in developing countries.

For many years, I practiced as a structural designer, mainly in the fields of strengthening and retrofit of masonry buildings to withstand seismic loads. I am professionally qualified and a Member of Esfahan Construction Engineering Organisation, Iran.
