Dr Liana Azizova
Pharmacy and Biomolecular Scences
I started my research career at the Faculty of Chemistry, Department of Organic and Biological Chemistry at Taurida National V.I.Vernadsky University (TNU), which was founded in 1918 with active participation from the famous geologist Vladimir Vernadsky. My research during undergraduate and graduate studies was focused on the synthesis of new phenyl S‑β-, p-tolyl S‑β- and p-tert-butylphenyl S-β-glycosides of 1-thio-N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine (or muramyl dipeptide, MDP) which revealed antineoplastic and adjuvant activities. In parallel to my studies at TNU and prior to enrolment in PhD studies, I worked for eight months as laboratory assistant at Tauric Ecological Institute (TEI). Having been inspired by research during my university studies, I decided to dedicate my career to research and enhance my experimental skills by choosing an interdisciplinary area of biochemistry, surface chemistry and biomedicine.
To gain knowledge in the area of surface chemistry, I joined the PhD programme at the Institute of Surface Chemistry (ISC), the leading research institution in this area in Ukraine. In September 2017, I will commence work on the DUALFUN project at the University of Brighton as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow.
