Scholarly biography
I'm a Senior Lecturer in Geography, specialising sexualities and particularly lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) spaces. Since completing my PhD in 2015 I've worked on a variety of national and international projects focused on LGBTQ equalities. My current research concentrates on the geographies of the GBQ men's Bear subculture.
Research interests
My research interests revolve around three main areas:
- LGBTQ equality issues and policies from a geographic perspective (locally, nationally, and transnationally);
- The spaces made and used by LGBTQ communities such as neighbourhoods, bars, and social groups;
- Issues of body image, shape and size amongst GBQ men, especially in the Bear subculture.
Most of my research has been done in partnership with LGBTQ community groups, charities, and activists from around the world. Through my teaching and research, I want to show and explore how we can use geography to improve LGBTQ lives.
Approach to teaching
I really enjoy teaching, especially on my specialist areas of gender and sexuality! So I bring high energy and enthusiasm to all of my lectures, using plenty of videos, group discussions, class polls, and sometimes a bit of quick research right there in the classroom. Learning isn't about just sitting and listening, it's about actually doing stuff! In 2019 I received an Excellence in Facilitating & Empowering Learning award for my dedication to students and personal approach to teaching.
To help students learn outside the classroom, I like to set a couple of important but accessible key readings – books which are particularly famous or influential, which outline key arguments, or which give a good summary of a topic. Usually these are academic readings, but sometimes writing or a video from activists and community groups is the best way to get stuck into a topic, and see why it really matters.Supervisory Interests
I'm interested in supervising postgrad projects in (but not limited to) the following areas: sexual politics outside the metropolis; social and cultural geographies of fat men; Participatory Action Research with LGBTQ communities; and Bear subcultures and spaces.
