Personal profile

Scholarly biography

Noel is a Senior Lecturer in the Built Environment. Before joining the University of Brighton (and on two sabbaticals since joining) Noel has worked in professional practice (in building and in civil engineering), for local authorities and with a major contractor. He qualified as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor in 1984 and his interested in design led him to study for a graduate diploma in architecture.

Since joining the University Noel has specialised in the economics, design and management of construction projects in both his teaching and research.  He has been on the committee of the Association of Researchers in Construction Management (ARCOM). He also acts a a consultant to Festival Republic and Live Nation with particular reference to occupational and crowd safety in the build and management of large events.

Approach to teaching

I have a strong background in professional practice in the UK but also on projects in France, Belgium and West and Central Africa. I like to think this helps me to deliver interesting and relevant material to students. Current teaching includes modules in Contract and Cost Management, Design Configuration and Procurement.

I try to illustrate my lectures with project based examples from personal experience or from contemporary (and sometimes historical) projects. I like students that challenge me and challenge the subject. Cost and contracts can be seen as fairly dry topics so the challenge is to make them interesting and most importantly to make them relevant.

Research interests

My research interests are in the management of construction projects. I’m also interested in the management of events such as music festivals which have many parallels with construction projects in their organisation, logistics and management.
