Personal profile

Research interests

My main research interest is to develop efficient modelling approaches for sprays. To achieve this, I combine engineering with applied mathematics and advanced computing techniques. My expertise includes fluid flow, multiphase flows, heat and mass transfer.

Since joining the University of Brighton in 2013, my research has been focussed on modelling of droplet dynamics, droplet heating and evaporation. Other subjects I am interested in and have contributed to are related to multiphase physics: focusing of particles in subsonic and supersonic flows, flows with shock waves; the effect of droplets on heat transfer in supersonic boundary layers; geomechanical effects in oil reservoirs. In my research, I extensively use and develop new tools based on applied mathematics, Computer-Aided Engineering and programming.

Approach to teaching

My teaching covers core engineering disciplines: mechanics of materials and fluid mechanics. Working at the intersection of these two fields benefits both my research and my teaching; it makes it possible to apply knowledge and skills from both subjects, thus providing a holistic approach when solving an engineering problem. I also find that this dual perception gives me a deeper understanding of physical phenomena.

My ongoing research activity equips me with exciting topics of current interest that I like to discuss with my students. I promote problem solving skills and creativity, while providing students with necessary guidance and feedback. When teaching, I try to involve students in a dialogue, encouraging active learning, independent and critical thinking. I find it rewarding to participate in my students’ progress, professional and personal development.

Scholarly biography

In 2012, I graduated from the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics at Lomonosov Moscow State University with a PhD degree in Physics and Mathematics. While in Moscow, I contributed to a number of research projects on particle migration and particle focusing.

As a researcher at the Schlumberger Moscow Research Center (2006-2009), I participated in the development of commercial software, which models flows through porous media (oil and gas). My projects were related to double porosity model and coupling geomechanics: stresses, porosity and permeability, together with fluid flow.

In 2013 I joined the Sir Harry Ricardo Laboratories at the University of Brighton as a Research Fellow. Most recently I was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics.

Supervisory Interests

I am interested in supervising research students in mathematical and numerical modelling for multiphase flows, aerodynamics and mass and heat transfer.
