Personal profile

Research interests

My research interests are intelligent manufacturing with a focus on remanufacturing working in close relationship with industry with case studies ranging from automotive components, rolling stocks, machine tools, aeroengine components leading to papers, patents and software prototypes

Scholarly biography

Dr. Yan Wang is one of the UK’s leading researchers in remanufacturing, has published 50+ papers in manufacturing and been granted 10 patents. Dr Wang serves on BSI technical group BS8887 which gives the definition of remanufacturing, and contributed to the forthcoming Part 3 of BS8887 “the Guide to choosing an appropriate end-of-life strategy”. She is an active reviewer of several highly rated journals and a member of the editorial board of “China Surface Engineering”. She is the secretary of the Sino-UK Low Carbon Manufacturing Consortium supported by EPSRC network fund (EP/J007870/1). She has organised several UK-China workshops in remanufacturing attended by senior government policy makers from the UK, e.g. BEIS, DIT and UKRI and China e.g. Minister of Information and Industry Technology (MIIT), standards development agencies, and industry associations. These workshops are the highest-level meetings of this kind between China and the UK in the area of remanufacturing to date. Before she moved to the UoB from the University of Nottingham, Ningbo Campus, she led a ¥9m RMB project (Approx. £1m) called Innovation Team in Low Carbon Manufacture of Automotive parts.

Approach to teaching

I am currently teaching Mechanical Design (Level 4), Manufacturing Instrumentation and measurement, and Manufacturing Engineering (Level 5) and Advanced Material Engineering to engineering students.

Supervisory Interests

My research is mainly on digital manufacturing/remanufacturing covering e.g. process simulations, operations management, supply chain, manufacturing process technologies, knowledge management, robotics as well as lifecycle data management and analyses. The research stream could be experimental, simulation and mathematical modelling.
