Social science

Studying social science with us is an opportunity to explore human society and relationships, covering subjects from social policy to psychology and sociology.

The flexible course structure gives you the freedom to tailor your degree to your own personal interests and career aspirations, choosing from a wide range of option modules and undertaking your own research. Throughout your degree you will have the opportunity to take part in seminars and debates, sharing ideas and knowledge with psychology, criminology and sociology students.

You'll have the chance to gain valuable experience and contacts through placement opportunities as part of your course. Social science students have the opportunity to spend part of their second year in a voluntary community-based work placement, while social policy students have work placements in years 2 and 3.

You'll graduate with the broad knowledge and skills necessary to begin a career in a number of sectors, from criminal justice administration and social research to community development and social work.

Volunteering is a great opportunity to develop your vocational skills and gain practical work experience while contributing to the wider community. Our Active Student programme pairs our students with a relevant organisation to offer a volunteering placement. Our strong links with the local community through our award-winning Community University Partnership Programme (CUPP) have enabled us to create partnerships with a range of organisations, allowing us to use our knowledge and resources for social benefit.
