Since completing this research, Carol has become internationally known for her work in promoting a child-rights based approach within schools. In 2014, she was invited to present a keynote address at an international symposium ‘Building a new strategic approach to school safety promotion’ at the University of Osaka, Japan. The symposium, sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Education, was attended by delegates from the Japanese Ministry of Education, UNICEF Japan, and academics from the University of Osaka, as well as delegates from the Ministries of Education in Taiwan and Thailand. On the basis of this presentation, and subsequent ongoing work with the University of Osaka, the Japanese Ministry of Education have introduced a Child Safety Promotion Programme into several schools in Osaka, with plans to introduce the programme into all regions of Japan.
Carol acts as an expert advisor for the development of this work. She will address a further conference in March 2018, and attend meetings with the Japanese Ministry of Education, to outline and discuss next steps to take in the development of their work.
She also acts as an expert advisor to UNICEF Finland which started developing a Finnish Rights Respecting Schools Programme in 2016. She has recently also been approached by UNICEF Norway to discuss the development of a similar programme on which they have embarked.
