Mapping of biological impacts caused by estrogenic chemicals in Chinese coastal waters

This project is an integrated approach involving both analytical chemistry, to determine concentrations of pollutants in organisms, combined with molecular techniques to establish the consequent biological impacts.

Project timeframes

The project ran from 2014 to 2016.

Projects aims

The aims of the project were to

  • establish a suitable bioindicator organism (the shellfish, blue mussel, Mytilus edulis) for a long term monitoring programme of estrogenic impact status of the Chinese coastal region.
  • characterise the organisms’ molecular level responses to estrogen exposure using contaminant-specific analytical tools.
  • relate any biological impacts observed to specific contaminant exposure levels gained from analytical chemistry analysis of the same tissues.

Project findings and impact

Output, findings and impact will be updated in due course.
