Transferring from another university

Are you enrolled at another university and thinking about transferring to a course at the University of Brighton? You could decide to transfer to Brighton at any time in your studies: this could be during the first few weeks of your first year or at the end of your first year so that you would start your second year of university with us.

We find people transfer to us for many reasons, for example, their circumstances may have changed, or they have decided to study a different subject.

What do I need to do?

Transfer is a serious step, which can take time to complete. First you need to speak with someone at your university (e.g. your personal tutor or course leader) to explore ways in which this kind of disruption to your studies could be avoided. You should also make sure that you understand the financial and practical implications of such a move. You may need to repeat a year of study, for example.

If, after exploring all options, you believe that you want to transfer then you should check that you meet the entry requirements for the Brighton course you are interested in.

You can find a full list of our degree programmes and entry requirements on our course pages.

We deal with all requests to transfer to Brighton on an individual basis. Our decision will be based on whether there are places available, whether you meet the entry requirements for the course, and by our desire to ensure you can make a successful transition to Brighton.

Next steps

Call our enquiries team on 01273 808752. They will talk you through the process and put you in touch with the admissions team for your chosen course.

If, after careful consideration, we think that a transfer to a course at Brighton is in your best interests we will ask you to complete our direct application form. Depending on the course you have applied for, you could be invited to interview or, if you are applying to a studio-based course, be asked to provide a portfolio of your work.

We strongly advise you to visit the university before making your final decision to transfer here. We run open days and other events throughout the year.

Our enquiries team can help

Will I have to repeat a year?

If you are switching to a Brighton course in the same subject, it is usually possible for us recognise your previous study.

However, it is important that you are not at a disadvantage compared to your fellow students, so if there are significant differences between your current course and the one you have chosen at Brighton, you may have to repeat a year.  These differences could relate to subject, module content, technical instruction or another aspect of your learning.

If you have to repeat a year please make sure you understand what the implications are in terms of your student funding before accepting the place.
