If you need to register with the Police it will be in different places depending on where you made your visa application:

  • If you applied for your visa from outside the UK: the condition to register with the Police will be printed on the Entry Clearance sticker in your passport. It will say ‘Police Registration’ or ‘Pol Reg’ in most cases.
  • If you applied for your visa from within the UK: the condition to register with the Police will be included in the decision letter you received when your documents and passport was returned by the Home Office.

If you are unsure whether or not you need to register please contact us at visas@brighton.ac.uk.

Do my dependants need to register?

If your spouse and/or children (aged 16 or over) are here in the UK as your dependants, and they are from one of the countries listed, they should also have the condition to register with the Police on their Entry Clearance Sticker or decision letter from the Home Office. They will be able to register with the Police at one of our appointments on campus, and update their Police Registration Certificate it in the same way as you.

Do I need to keep my registration certificate up to date?

It is a condition of your UK visa that you register with the Police and keep them informed of any changes to the details on your registration certificate. Failing to do so can result in you being fined (up to £5,000), and in some cases, your visa could be cancelled or not renewed.

You need to make arrangements to update your certificate if any of the following details change:

  • New address
  • New passport
  • Extensions to your visa or a new visa
  • New study information or change to university/college (this includes moving from a course at the International College to a course at the University of Brighton)
  • Change of nationality
  • Any new landing conditions
  • New employment
  • Change of marital status
  • Exemption from Police Registration

Any changes should be reported within 7 days.

How can I register with the Police?

Appointments can be booked directly through the Sussex Police Nationality Unit. Please contact them at nationality.unit@sussex.pnn.police.uk.

How can I update the details on my Police Registration Certificate?

Once issued, a Police Registration Certificate is valid for the duration of your stay in the UK. It will only expire if you are outside the UK for a continuous period of more than 1 year. This means if you already have a certificate and have not been outside the UK for more than 1 year, you do not need to register again, even if it was issued in another part of the UK, or you were studying at another college or university. Instead you should ask the Police to update the details on it.

Appointments to update your Police Registration Certificate can be booked directly through the Sussex Police Nationality Unit. Please contact them at nationality.unit@sussex.pnn.police.uk

I have lost my Police Registration Certificate what should I do?

You will also need to report the loss to the Nationality Unit and request an appointment to be issued a new certificate. Their email address is nationality.unit@sussex.pnn.police.uk.
